The art piece illustrated below was an original submission made to Indiana University's Earth as Art competition in 2008. It was the winning entry.
The piece is based on a satellite image of Japan's Mount Fujisan, provided by the British TopSat satellite (courtesy of the TopSat Consortium, copyright QinetiQ). Various artistic refinements and modifications were applied to the satellite image, to create the resultant artwork. The title of the piece, Ice Over Fire, is meant to contrast the current frozen nature of Mount Fujisan, with its deep underground volcanic activity.
If not for the title the work [it] could be seen as any living thing. The work is seemingly abstract and has a three-dimensional quality that I find fascinating. A thought provoking piece. Anonymous judge, Indiana University Earth as Art Competition
